Windows 7 Moves In With the Family

Posted July 29, 2009

Redmond announced that a Windows 7 Family Pack will be available, and will cover 3 Computers in the same household. This offer will not be available in all markets.

"We will continue to work with our partners and expect to have other great offers in the future as we lead up to and beyond general availability," a Microsoft representative said. "We have nothing to announce at this time."

Unlike Microsoft, Apple has been selling Family Packs since 2002. Why is Microsoft trying to catch up now? Why don't they create an alternative to say, "We're not behind, because we have a whole different product."? And most importantly, why am I listing questions you might be thinking?

As a recap, Windows Seven will be available to purchase October 22nd. If you are in the market for a new PC, wait a few months 'til Oct. 22nd. It will make the data migration much easier.

Will Google's OS Bring Us Closer to the Web?

Posted July 9, 2009

Google says their Chrome OS will be so secure "users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates." But how could an OS that is virtually a browser itself be more secure than your everyday Windows and Mac machines? The OS is even named after their browser!

Like the Chrome browser that is based off of the open-source Webkit project, the OS will be based off of the open-source Linux kernel. Google says it will run on x86 and ARM processors and include a new windowing system. Google says this OS is not related to Android, and the Chrome OS will be positioned for netbooks, which are usually more web-oriented.

"I have serious doubts about their claims simply because an operating system must execute code and malware is code,"says Dave Marcus, the director of security research and communications for McAfee Avert Labs.

It is unlikely Chrome OS will make it beyond the small percentage of market share that Ubuntu and Red Hat hold. Also, a large factor is the level of desirability among developers to build applications that run on this OS.

Change Bowling Ball Color in Wii Sports Bowling

Posted May 30, 2009

You can change the color of the Bowling Ball in Wii Sports:

After selecting the Mii a warning screen will display. Here you can hold down the directional pad and press A to change the color.

  • D-Pad Left: Red
  • D-Pad Right: Gold
  • D-Pad Up: Blue
  • D-Pad Down: Green

I hear there is another type of ball, but you'll have to earn it.

Turn Your Wii Controller into a Mouse

Posted May 25, 2009

You can use the Wii Remote as a general input device for your PC. You just need a Bluetooth enabled PC(if you don't you can purchase a Bluetooth Adapter for about 30 bucks), a Wii Remote of course, and the free GlovePIE.

  1. Download and install the free GlovePIE.
  2. Click Add in the Bluetooth control panel, and hold down the 1 and 2 buttons on the remote.
  3. Follow on-screen instructions to search for a new device.
  4. Select the Wii Remote, and don't use a passkey.
  5. Release the 1 and 2 keys after finalizing the connection.
  6. GlovePIE uses scripts to translate controller commands to PC commands. Click File•Open, pick a script, and choose Run. You can find scripts at http://tinyurl.com/GlovePIE-Scripts.

Microsoft's App Store

Posted March 16, 2009

Microsoft has unveiled plans for an app store called Windows Marketplace for Mobile. Like Apple and Android, Microsoft will give developers a 70 percent cut of sales. Developers will be charged $99 annually to submit their apps to the marketplace. Student developers can submit apps for free through the DreamSpark program.

Microsoft says that it wants developers to spend more time "writing innovative applications, and less time trying to navigate the approval process." When it opens its doors, they will accept applications in the spring and apps in the summer. It is expected to ship with Windows Mobile 6.5. The question is, will there be apps for the Zune?

Windows 7: Microsoft Has Ears!

Posted January 17, 2009

Is it true??? Does Microsoft actually LISTEN to what us consumers want? With the release of Windows 7, I think we can say they do listen.

Windows 7, compared to its predecessor, Vista, it is very lightweight. Microsoft has stripped away some of the previously bundeld apps. These are now Windows Live Essentials, which you can get from get.live.com. Getting rid of the apps also helped "the big M" avoid legal issues and get rig of the infamous "Vista Bloat".

Thanks to DLNA, Windows 7 can play media to your XBOX 360, PS3, or another Windows 7 computer, along with any other DLNA compatable device. To use the feature, just right-click on the media you want to send, go to the "Play To..."Menu, and select the device you want to send it to.

Microsoft has a new technology called "Device Stage" in Windows 7. When you connect a device, it automatically installs drivers and software to go with the device. It then opens a Window where it shows what you can do with the device.

Microsoft has also improved with networking, with HomeGroup. Let's say you already have your Windows 7 network set up, and you bring home a new computer. Once you connect it to the network, it will ask you if you want to join the HomeGroup. You just have to type in the password, and just like that, it is apart of the network.

The development plans are pretty basic. There will only be "the beta", and one RC, and then it is out. It is safe to say we can expect Windows 7 at the end of the year or early 2010.

Cyber Monday

Posted December 1, 2008

When people think of Thanksgiving sales, they usually think of Black Friday. But today, is Cyber Monday. Cyber Monday is like an online version of Black Friday, sometimes with even better savings. Last year consumers spent $733 Million on Cyber Monday. To my surprize, someone actually invented Cyber Monday. It was Silverman's organization that started it. It started in 2005 to jump-start online shopping. 84 percent of retailers plan to have a Cyber Monday today. That is up from 72% last year. If you still have money leftover from Black Friday, consider looking at Cyber Monday.

I wonder what it looked like in ....?
